BSP Consulting – one of the largest independent civil and structural engineering companies in the East Midlands

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has worked in Leicestershire for almost 25 years and opened a dedicated Leicester office in 2007 as part of its expansion across the region.

The company offers civil engineering, structural engineering, transport engineering, geotechnical and environmental engineering across all sectors.

Over the years, BSP has helped to shape the built environment across Leicester and Leicestershire, after being a key partner in many high-profile schemes at venues such as Makers’ Yard, the National Space Centre, Brooksby Melton College, Loughborough University, and Birkett House School in Wigston.

We were the civil and structural engineer for the Abode student accommodation scheme next to Leicester railway station and along with many other companies, donated expertise for the Matt Hampson Foundation to build a rehabilitation centre at Burrough Court Estate near Melton Mowbray.

Whether a heritage project, a new build or an industrial unit, BSP Consulting has provided engineering expertise to help hundreds of schemes across Leicestershire succeed.

Our aim is to provide exceptional advice and value engineering – creating innovative solutions to overcome challenges and achieve top results.

Below is a flavour of some of the developments that the company has been involved with in Leicestershire. You can see many more under the projects page of our website. Please get in touch if we can help with your schemes….whatever stage they are at.

Project focus – Phoenix Cinema, Art Centre and Café Bar

Independent cinema, art centre and café bar, Phoenix in Leicester, opened a new £8m extension in 2023.

The project included the creation of two additional cinema screens, a new art gallery and a larger café bar which doubled the size of the previous one.

Built on land donated to the Phoenix by Leicester City Council, the extension received £4m National Lottery money invested by Arts Council England.

BSP undertook transport engineering and drafted the transport statement for the scheme for the Phoenix, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2023.

Architect was Arcadis.

Project focus – Ashby Hastings Primary School

Ashby Hastings Primary School is a new build high-tech eco-friendly academy school that has been designed to fit into the National Forest surroundings.

Built over two levels and opened in 2021, the £5.5m, 210-place school in Ashby-de-la-Zouch has been described as ‘unique and high-tech’ – and will be the blueprint for other similar schemes in Leicestershire.

BSP Consulting was the civil, structural and transportation engineer on the scheme, built on a challenging site, with different levels.

The client was Leicestershire County Council, contractor Willmott Dixon and architects were LAST Architects and DSA Environment + Design.

Project focus – Rose Business Park

Engineers at BSP Consulting have been providing civil, structural and geotechnical consultancy services at a 7.8-acre commercial scheme at Rose Park, Blaby.

Being developed by Brackley Property Developments, as a Joint Venture with Grange Developments, the site in Leicestershire is just off Blaby bypass and with good access to both Leicester city centre and Junction 21 of the M1/M69.

The £7 million Rose Business Park Blaby scheme is providing mainly commercial warehousing up to 75,000 sq ft and office premises up to 21,500 sq ft in a mix of single-storey and two-storey steel-frame units. The new build industrial park will offer design and build solutions for office, industrial and warehouse occupiers.

BSP’s role in the development included the design of a sustainable drainage strategy, featuring swales and an attenuation basin to allow surface water to be treated before discharge into the adjacent watercourse.

Isherwood McCann provided architectural services, while Roe Developments and X-Cel Construct were contractors.

Project focus – Jewry Wall Museum

BSP is the civil and structural engineer on the Jewry Wall Museum renovation in Leicester.

The company was appointed by Leicester City Council to undertake an assessment of the scheme and to take it through to construction stage.

The museum, which opened in 1966, is home to one of the UK’s tallest civilian Roman structures, along with the impressive remains of a Roman bathhouse. The renovation scheme aims to transform the site into a world-class visitor centre.

Due to reopen in summer 2024, the scheme has a number of contractors and consultants working on it including Oliveti Construction, A + G Architects, Haley Sharpe Design (hsd), Elmwood Projects, Heritage Interactive and Pulse Consult.

Project focus – Wyggeston Hospital and Cottages

Taking the award for Large Residential Scheme of the Year at the 2022 ProCon Leicestershire Awards, the Wyggeston Hospital and Cottages development included adding a new administrative and entertainment hub and additional housing to the existing extra-care accommodation. Eight new apartments and six cottages were created.

BSP was involved in the civil and structural engineering aspects of the project, which was submitted for an award by Corporate Architecture.

Client was Wyggeston Hospital and other members of the team included agent Andrew Granger & Co, contractor S&S Contracting, ADM Surveyors, interior designer Renray and landscape architect Keary Design Associates.

Project focus – Abbey Meadows

BSP Consulting undertook the design work for the post planning to construction phase of the £10m Abbey Meadows housing scheme in Leicester.

Built on a 4.8-acre site 200 yards from the National Space Centre and the city’s Abbey Park, the development is part of the transformation of the Waterside area – a huge swathe of previously derelict industrial land, stretching along the River Soar and Grand Union Canal down the full western side of the city.

Leicester-based developer GS Developments partnered with Lovell Partnerships and Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) in a joint venture to build the homes.

Lovell Partnerships built 47 affordable homes to be managed by NCHA. A further 35 build-to-rent properties were constructed by Lovell, to be retained and managed by GS Residential.

BSP Consulting handled the details of the civil engineering, structural engineering, flood risk assessment and SuDS scheme for the project, which completed in 2021.

Project focus – St Martins Lodge

Engineers at BSP Consulting provided expertise for the conversion of former empty offices into a boutique hotel in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter.

The development included alterations and an extension to the Grade II listed Georgian building at 16 New Street/2-4 Peacock Lane to provide 28 double and twin rooms, including a top floor junior suite.

Adjacent to the site of the car park where King Richard III’s remains were discovered in 2012, the boutique hotel development has been a finalist in a number of awards.

The contractor on the project was Stepnell and the architect was Corporate Architecture.

Project focus – Ottawa Road

A £1.2m neighbourhood improvement scheme on Ottawa Road and the corner of Edmonton Road in St Matthews, Leicester, has boosted safety and access to communal areas.

The project involved removing old brick garages and bin stores and replacing them with new parking bays, new street lighting and railings.

It followed long-term work between Leicester City Council’s neighbourhood housing team, ward councillors, and local tenants’ and residents’ associations to identify the problems that they most wanted to see addressed, such as fly-tipping, shortage of parking and safety issues.

BSP Consulting was the civil and structural engineer on the project – supporting through all RIBA stages.

Project focus – Leaders Farm, Lutterworth

Leaders Farm is an £8.2 million development - part of Leicestershire County Council plans to develop a 6.1 acre site in Lutterworth.

The site involves developing two drive-thru units, a 50,000 sq ft light industrial unit and smaller light industrial units and offices, dependent on demand.

BSP Consulting carried out transportation and civil engineering services which included a noise assessment, a scoping exercise, a travel plan, a transport assessment, a flood risk assessment and a drainage strategy.

The client was Leicestershire County Council, contractor Wates Construction, and architect RG&P.
