Small Residential Scheme of the Year Award 2013 Finalist
At 2 Howard Road the Leicester contractor Moseley Brown Developments has created a new detached home with sustainability built-in – from the ground source heat pump to the photovoltaic panels on the roof.
Designed by Marchini Curran Associates of Nottingham, the Leicester house, which had a contract value of £300,000, is highly energy efficient and uses low-energy technologies for hot water, heating and electricity.
Project Overview
2 Howard Road is on the edge of the Stoneygate conversation area, an extremely popular part of Leicester.
Although this house has two full floors, the eaves to the north and south elevations have been lowered reducing the visual impact and the house appears as one and a half storeys.
The exterior of the property is clad with European cedar with a standing seam zinc roof, pre-weathered to a mid-grey colour with windows, doors and roof lights having dark grey frames and door leaves.
The large living and dining areas and all three bedrooms face south, benefitting from solar gain via generous windows. Sun pipes and roof lights bring natural light into the kitchen, bathrooms and utility areas. The house is a highly insulated airtight envelope.
