The Belgrave Riverside development is on the former British Union Shoe Machinery (BUSM) head office on Ross Walk. They are Whetstone-based Westleigh Developments’ most energy efficient private sale homes in the region to date, each benefitting from solar heated water.
The initial £4.5million phase of the development has seen 25 new three, four and five bedroom homes built and occupied. The next phase of building is also proving successful.
The Belgrave Riverside development, designed by architect Marchini Curran Associates, has revived a derelict area and created a new community.
The site was formerly the Leicester head office of the British United Shoe Machinery works, once the world’s largest manufacturer of footwear machinery and materials. Since the closure of the company in 2000 the site has remained derelict.
Belgrave Riverside forms part of the 30-acre regeneration area close to the River Soar. The high quality, environmentally friendly and contemporary new homes offer three, four and five bedroom properties for those wishing to settle close to the city centre.
Without this new residential development the site would almost certainly have remained derelict for many more years. Westleigh, however, embraced the environmental and construction issues to enable this much needed scheme to be developed.
