Low energy use, low capital cost and low maintenance costs were designed into the new 10,250 square foot office building for Charles Street Buildings (Leicester) Limited at its Thurmaston Industrial Estate at Melton Road.
The building is substantially naturally lit throughout but summer solar gain is prevented by the use of solar shading and a large roof overhang. The building is naturally ventilated and designed to allow night air to cool the structure in periods of hot weather.
The selection of natural and local materials reflects the desire of Charles Street Buildings to create a building with a sympathetic environmental impact.
Designed by Leicester architect Stephen George & Partners, the design uses local materials including natural Charnwood granite constructed in the way commonly seen in the Charnwood Forest area.
Where possible local suppliers were used for the hardwood which is a prominent feature externally and internally. Hardwood was used in throughout the roof soffits and fascias. Internally oak is used on the internal staircase from first to second floor.
Undyed wool was used for the carpet tiles with a backing of up to 74 per cent recycled materials. The tile colours are derived from the wool of seven different UK breeds of sheep.
