At Shackerstone Walk in Carlton, a high quality and low energy home has been created for a couple to live in throughout their approaching retirement.
The £450,000 contract saw Staniforth Architects of Leicester design the home built by contractor Brown & Green of Houghton on the Hill.
The position of the three bedroom house maximises the efficient use of photovoltaic panels on the roof and heat from the sun for pre-heating the bedrooms before sunset.
The clients plan to retire in this house and so were very conscious of the long term running costs. The interiors have been designed and finished to a very high standard.
The orientation of the house on the site has been carefully considered to allow for the efficient use of the photovoltaic panels on the roof, but more crucially for the exploitation of solar gains.
The house was designed to meet all current building regulations for U-values as expected, and then each building element was bettered by at least 20%, adding further to the thermal efficiency of the fabric and structure.
Staniforth Architects managed the project from inception to completion, including preparation of the brief, planning, tender and detail design documents and administering the build under a traditional contract.
