The Food Hall at Leicester Market completed Phase 1 of the regeneration strategy for this historically important economic area of Leicester’s city centre.
Leicester City Council’s multi-phased regeneration strategy also includes demolition of the old indoor market and the creation of new retail units and a public square.
The modern, light and airy Food Hall is part of the plan to create a destination shopping experience and a public realm space for events, broadening the area’s appeal and re-connecting it with the main shopping area.
The market’s regeneration aims to broaden its appeal, attracting new customers and new businesses to ensure it is at the heart of the city’s offer to residents and visitors for generations to come.
A key goal was to relocate the traders who had built businesses in the degrading Market Centre to encourage a strong connection with the outdoor market.
The deliberate strategy to target local companies with local workers has meant much of the investment from the City Council has been recycled locally for continued benefit of the city economy. The project also provided much needed training and employment opportunities for local people.
Since opening, this flagship building has encouraged new shopping demographics. The private sector has shown significant interest in investing in the surrounding premises.
