A tired, neglected period property has been turned back into a warm, efficient modern home, preserving its original character.
The Mount is a Victorian house with tall brick chimneys, arched windows and steep gables . But it was damp, draughty and situated in overgrown grounds. The client wanted modern standards of comfort and running costs without losing its special features.
The house was stripped back and the entire top-floor structure rebuilt, swapping an internal valley roof for a full mansard to reclaim a usable floor of space upstairs.
The clients wanted the best of both worlds: 21st-century comfort wrapped around 19th-century character. Original details worth keeping were saved and restored, including the joinery, windows, fireplaces and mouldings.
The main staircase was relocated to make the internal layout flow and the whole building was wrapped in high-spec modern insulation with underfloor heating throughout.
A new single-story garden room was added to the rear, flooding the living space with natural light and enabling enjoyment of the large grounds that have been opened up.
