Groundbreaking Marks Scope’s Start of New Community Hub for Nottingham City Church

Published 05th January 2026 by Scope Construction Ltd

Revd. Steve Silvester of St Nicholas Church and other members of St Nic’s, joined Scope Construction and representatives from architects Marsh and Grochowski and Focus Consultants on Wednesday 17th December for a groundbreaking to mark the start of a landmark project for one of Nottingham’s longest established city centre churches.

The new build annexe, adjacent to the main church building on Maid Marian Way aims to expand the church’s work and service to the community. As it officially breaks ground, the new annexe, designed as a flexible space, will enable the church to offer a wider range of ministries and community services to people across Nottingham.

The three storey building will have a contemporary feel, cladding a steel frame with a combination of brick, stone and glass, whilst linking into the existing building and providing an accessible lift to all levels. The modern facilities will include a language school for newcomers seeking to build community and confidence, space for children and young people to learn and grow and rooms for new ministries, groups and activities.

Revd. Steve Silvester said:
“Breaking ground is a moment of deep gratitude and expectation. We believe God has called us to serve the people of Nottingham in practical, life-giving ways, and this new annexe will help us extend Christ’s love to more children, families, and individuals in need. Our prayer is that this space becomes a blessing to the whole city.”

Emily Ridyard - English Language and Refugee Support Coordinator said:
“We are so excited to see work begin on the new annexe. Our current free language school meets in the church, but we are at capacity and have to operate a waiting list. Learning English is vital in newcomers being able to integrate, find community and build their lives in Nottingham.”

Construction, which is being undertaken by Loughborough based Scope Construction, will continue throughout 2026, with the new community hub expected to open in spring 2027. Once complete, it will provide a welcoming environment where people of all backgrounds can find support, connection and the hope provided by a community.

Maz Patel, Managing Director of Scope Construction said:
“This our third project in the City of Nottingham and the groundbreaking is a landmark moment for St Nic’s Church. We are committed to helping people, businesses and communities to thrive in the built environment and it is always special to be involved in a community project like this for a client who is dedicated to improving the lives of young people and families through its outreach work. We look forward to delivering a project that fits the purpose it will serve. The project strengthens our portfolio in the charity sector.”
