Transformation of The Grammar is Revealed to the Public
‘The Grammar’, a transformative project completed in the heart of Heanor, is now officially open to the public following its grand opening ceremony. Once a school, the space has now been rethought as a mixed-use development, which will deliver high-quality business, employment and community space.
The event, hosted by Amber Valley Borough Council, was a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved on the project to come together and see the transformation first-hand, before it was opened to the public at midday. Activities included live entertainment, performers, celebration speeches and history tours. With The Grammar being so central to the town of Heanor, the day was a fantastic opportunity to re-introduce the public to the building and the restored and revitalised spaces that it offers.
GSSArchitecture have led the design and conservation of the project as lead consultant, architect and principal designer, later taking on the role of contract administrator. They worked closely with the client, Amber Valley Borough Council and main contractor, A&S Enterprises Ltd. to bring the local landmark back to life.
With the Grade II listed former Grammar School building having been derelict since 2015, the goal was to unveil and restore many of its historic features. This included the restoration of the iconic cupola and the reinstatement of the main hall ceiling to its former grandeur. Ensuring the longevity of the building was also crucial. The design team were able to achieve this through strategic extensions which provided new entry points together with stair and plant space. The addition of the new plant with internal insulation has contributed to the decarbonisation of the building, which is now fully electric and has achieved an EPC A Rating.
Tom Jagger, Partner at GSS and Lead Architect on the project, commented: ‘It is fantastic to see The Grammar reopened to the public and returned it to its former glory within the heart of Heanor. We are proud to have played a key role in revitalising the space as a high-quality, mixed-use development. This project is a great example of how thoughtful design and collaboration can breathe new life into historic buildings but also reimagining their purpose to meet the needs of the future.
Joanne Bamford, Economic Growth Manager at Amber Valley Borough Council and the Client Lead throughout the project, said, ‘The Grammar has delivered a wonderful heritage building back to a sustainable use that will deliver a legacy to the town, with quality work that has delivered a site fit for the future. Taking the site from a derelict building required much foresight but has allowed us to appreciate the wonderful features that make this building special. The site is especially precious to the many former students at the school and invoked many memories’
This latest appointment highlights GSSArchitecture’s proven expertise in conservation and heritage projects. Alongside this, we are currently leading the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Ramsden Building for the University of Huddersfield and the restoration of Twyford Abbey in Ealing.
