The new endoscopy facility at Leicester General Hospital replaced 50-year-old buildings with an innovative, sustainable and accessible environment for patients and clinical teams.
The single-storey building has six procedure rooms, 20 private endoscopy pods, discharge lounges, offices, staff areas and stores.
The project was successfully delivered within budget, despite the complexities of constructing on a live hospital site.
Endoscopy services were previously dispersed across multiple locations. Consolidating these services into a single, modern facility has increased operational efficiency, improved patient flow, and expanded capacity, allowing around 17,500 patients to be seen a year.
In response to growing demand, the new unit will help patients be seen more promptly. This will contribute towards earlier diagnosis for conditions such as cancer, which endoscopy procedures help to detect.
The unit will have the capacity to see an extra 9,000 patients every year, which will play an important part in reducing waiting lists.
