Balfour Beatty helps local school leave legacy for future generations at Loughborough University

Balfour Beatty and a group of Year Five pupils from Mountfields Lodge School have buried a time capsule in the ground at the new National Centre of Sports and Exercise Medicine at Loughborough University, set to open in early 2015.

Part of the university’s East Park campus development, the new three-storey Health and Bioscience building will serve as a National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine at Loughborough University. The Balfour Beatty project team was joined by local schoolchildren to celebrate near completion of a building that will soon provide 5,000m2 of new teaching and research space. The project lead, Jason Stanbridge, also recently gave a presentation to the school about the construction works and demonstrated the importance of site safety.

The capsule was provided by the school and contains items of interest within three themes chosen for their relevance to the National Centre of Sport and Exercise Medicine: local sport, health in the UK and sport across the world. Items placed in the time capsule included letters written by the pupils and teachers, a list of the school’s sports fixtures for 2014, photographs and
newspaper clippings covering sports events, a medal and a swimming cap.

Graham Orsborn, Capital Projects Manager at Loughborough University said: “We were pleased to work with Balfour Beatty to identify and allocate an appropriate space on site for the time capsule project. It has been great to be able to engage with local school students to get them thinking about sport and health, both now and in the future, and also help them learn about
construction.”

Ian Taylor, Balfour Beatty Managing Director for the East Midlands, said: “It was a great opportunity to engage the school with this project and enable the pupils to view our construction
works. We have provided the pupils with an understanding of the hard work involved in constructing the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine and demonstrated to them the
benefits that this prestigious building will bring for many years to come.”
