Hayward Architects Celebrates 40 Years of Practice

Hayward Architects is marking its 40th anniversary this year, celebrating four decades of architectural practice rooted in quality design, technical expertise, and long-standing client relationships. 

Founded in 1986, Hayward Architects has grown from a small local practice into a well-established architectural studio with a strong reputation across the Midlands and beyond. Over the past 40 years, the practice has delivered a diverse portfolio of work spanning residential, commercial, heritage, agricultural, and mixed-use developments. 

Today, the practice is led by Directors Lee Ward and Zoe Massey, who took over the business almost 7 years ago and have continued to build on its strong foundations laid down by Jeff Hayward,  while steering the practice forward. Under their leadership, Hayward Architects has expanded its team, embraced evolving technologies, and strengthened its expertise in planning strategy, design delivery, and regulatory compliance. 

“Reaching 40 years is a real milestone for the practice,” said Lee Ward, Director at Hayward Architects. “It reflects the trust our clients place in us, the strength of our team, and the values that have underpinned the business since it was founded. We’re proud of our history, but just as focused on the future.” 

Zoe Massey added: “What’s been consistent throughout the practice’s history is a practical, considered approach to architecture — creating buildings that work well, respond to their context, and stand the test of time. As we look ahead, sustainability, adaptability, and thoughtful design will continue to be central to what we do.” 

As part of its 40th anniversary, Hayward Architects will be reflecting on key projects from its history while continuing to support clients with a growing workload of residential and commercial schemes. The practice also remains actively involved in industry events, awards, and community initiatives. 

With a strong team, a robust pipeline of projects, and a clear vision for the future, Hayward Architects enters its fifth decade with confidence and ambition.
