Leicester City Council approves £3.5m city centre redevelopment

Published 02nd November 2026 by Leicester City Council

Leicester City Council has approved plans for a £3.5m redevelopment to improve pedestrian access between Green Dragon Square and St Martin’s Square in the city centre.

The scheme involves demolishing council-owned vacant retail units at 12–20 Market Place to create a step-free pedestrian route connecting the two public spaces.

The redevelopment will also introduce landscaped areas, children’s adventure play facilities and paved spaces designed to accommodate temporary street food traders.

According to planning documents, the project aims to improve accessibility and create additional public space within the city centre.

Construction could begin in November, with the council previously estimating a 12-month delivery period.

More than £1m of the £3.5m project cost is being funded through a government grant allocated to improving public transport infrastructure in Leicester.
