nmcn launch story book to inspire future generations

As an industry we are facing our worst ever skills crisis, so it’s vital that we work hard now to inspire future generations of construction workers at every level.

As part of our Positive Impact Plan we have committed to engaging with at least 5,000 children by 2025. We will inspire young people around the world of work and encourage them to consider the construction industry. By pledging to educate school children about the industry, we can do our bit to ensure we continue to attract skilled workers to our industry.

As part of these efforts we have written our first ever children’s story book. “When I grow up” takes you through the journey of twins Harry and Amy, who are considering their future careers as part of their school careers day competition. The story covers a range of engineering activities and demonstrates to children that without the hard work of those in the construction industry, many other roles would not be made possible.

The book is aimed at Key Stage 1 (Ages 4-7) and aims to inspire young minds to consider a career in construction while increasing community engagement, raising money for Mind and building greater relationships with schools as part of our ongoing STEM efforts.

Inspired by the book, we have created an animated version of When I Grow Up. This is designed to help make our message as easy as possible to spread and as accessible as it can be for all. There is also a signed version for those children with hearing impairments which has been signed by our own Adam Scattergood, Apprentice Estimator.
