The University’s new sports facility in Oadby includes a 25 metre swimming pool, spa, large gym, studio and changing facilities. The development links with an existing sports hall and team changing facilities through a new shared reception area.
Designed by Brimelow McSweeney Architects, the building was constructed by contractor Bowmer & Kirkland and successfully achieved a BREEAM ‘excellent’ environmental rating.
The University of Leicester’s new sports facility has already signed up more than 2,000 student and private members.
A new build on the site of a previous structure at the end of its serviceable life, the redevelopment also included a large car park, a bio-diverse wildlife garden, pond and amenity space and the refurbishment of six derelict tennis courts.
The facility needed to be self-financing by producing an income from membership fees that will cover the full costs of running the facility. The design produced a club with a high-end commercial feel, both in facilities, planning and materials, while giving the university a durable asset that requires as minimal maintenance as is possible.
Notable design features include the large entrance and atrium, used as a social space for informal meetings, a helical stair, and a first floor gym where people can survey the activities below.
The large areas of west and north facing glazing give spectacular views over the running track.
