A new landmark building for Leicester, The Summit’s tower and adjacent blocks contain 369 rooms of student accommodation – all of which were snapped up.
Designed by Maber, The Summit is on Eastern Boulevard and features a 22 storey, 66 metre high, elliptical tower. There are two smaller accommodation blocks in the development, by Megaclose, which had a contract value of £13 million.
The Summit sits on a prominent corner site of a former hosiery factory near De Montfort University.
The accommodation is top of the market and was designed to appeal to postgraduate and overseas students, with flat-screen TVs and internet access as standard.
The two-storey lower block has provision for 10 studios to be suitable for wheelchair users, with kitchens and bathroom fittings to suit the needs of disabled residents.
A challenge facing the architects was to create a design which complemented the two storey Victorian housing behind The Summit and the larger scale development alongside Eastern Boulevard.
The architectural treatment to the facades varies to achieve interest and to break down the elevations. The use of curved facades adds dynamism and reduces the apparent size.
