A50 Corridor - Fiveways Junction, Leicester

Infrastructure Project of the Year Award 2025 Finalist

The £8.5m A50 corridor project included substantial remodelling of the Fiveways junction – a long term source of driver confusion, congestion and disruption along one of the busiest strategic routes in Leicester.

Designed to support Leicester’s Waterside regeneration area, the project also included the extension of segregated cycle tracks along the entire arterial route, connecting the city centre to destinations including Glenfield Hospital.

Also included were a new bus lane, traffic calming works in local neighbourhood streets and public realm works along the Woodgate Corridor and around a local shopping precinct.

Further Information

The project set out to rebalance traffic at a network level, redirecting vehicles to roads with excess capacity and maintain a priority link for walking, cycling and passenger transport along the A50, through the Waterside area and into the city centre and onward destinations.

It has contributed to an increase in cycling numbers across the junction, a reduction in bus journey time and an increase in fare paying passenger numbers.

The project has also unlocked nearby transport schemes across Rally Park to improve connectivity west of the river and provide alternative route choices for various transport modes.
