Small Non-Residential Scheme of the Year Award 2025 Finalist

Birstall Golf Club was transformed from a dated and underperforming facility into a vibrant, energy-efficient and inclusive destination. A footprint reduction enabled a significant upgrade to the practice green and created an expansive ground-level terrace.

Two new balconies and three large dormers invite both golfers and non- golfers to enjoy the surrounding landscape from the new first floor bar and dining area.

Inefficient gas systems were replaced with renewable technologies including solar panels, battery storage and multi-functional heat pumps for year-round climate control. Upgraded insulation and A-rated glazing significantly reduced energy consumption by 72 per cent in the first six months.

Further Information

The vision was to design a self-sufficient, low-maintenance and sustainable clubhouse that not only serves the functional needs of Birstall Golf Club but also stands out for its aesthetic appeal.

Inefficient layouts at the club, founded in 1901, were transformed into flexible, inviting environments tailored for social interaction, events and hospitality.

Through targeted demolition, repurposed layouts and a minimal yet impactful extension, the clubhouse has been modernised. Despite the completed extension having a 50 per cent smaller footprint than the original dining wing, all core functions are retained.
