A major project at Leicester Cathedral saw significant but subtle repairs and renovations, designed to ensure the long-term preservation of both the façade and interior elements.
The scheme also included the design of an extension, to replace the former Song School, in which to house a new Heritage Learning Centre and to address a pressing need for additional facilities and space adjacent to the Cathedral.
The extension includes a new basement, and during excavations 850 years of burials on the site was unearthed with further evidence of Anglo-Saxon, Roman and prehistoric activity.
The reordering the Grade II* listed cathedral was driven by the need to serve a contemporary liturgy and the building’s role as a civic place for events.
Previously poor accessibility was improved by forming un-stepped access, replacing a floor and creating a new doorway. The interior was redecorated, new lighting installed and all building services were replaced.
The Heritage Learning Centre provides the necessary back of house facilities for a busy civic church as well as hosting a gallery plus learning and hospitality spaces.
